Here are our upcoming events for Week 1 of the Big Read, free and open to all:

March 20: Yoga Class

Attend a yoga class taught by Kelly Compton, a certified yoga instructor. Please call (313) 943-2330 or visit dearbornlibrary.org to register.

March 22: Keynote Lecture

6:30 – 7:30pm

Sociology Professor Arifa Javed will lead a lecture focusing on The Namesake and Jhumpa Lahiri.  Dr. Javed has been at the University of Michigan-Dearborn since 1998 after moving from India in 1995. Her current research interests include immigration, acculturation, changing family dynamics, and challenges of parenting.

March 23: From Gulley to Wyoming: The Origin of Street and Place Names in Dearborn

7:00 – 8:00pm

Staff of the Dearborn Historical Museum will discuss stories and share photos related to how certain Dearborn streets, landmarks, and neighborhoods received their present names.

March 24: The Immigrant Experience and the Roots of American Comics

Location:

Green Brain Comics

2:00 – 4:00pm

Eastern Michigan University Professor Richard Rubenfeld will give a presentation on the immigrant experience and the roots of American comics with a panel discussion to follow.
