Open Photo Competition

UPDATE: The winners of the photo competition have been announced! All 51 competition entries are on display until May 19, 2014 in the Rotunda Gallery on the first floor of the Henry Ford Centennial Library. Don’t miss this chance to view these beautiful works of photography featuring the environment, nature, and wildlife.

You can download a complete list of works in the exhibit, including prices for items that are available for purchase. Most works are available for sale; if you are interested in purchasing artwork, please contact the Dearborn Community Fund office at 313-943-5478.

The Dearborn Public Library presents…

“Do You Hear the Call?”, an open photo competition in conjunction with The Big Read, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) in partnership with Arts Midwest. The book selected for The Big Read Dearborn, a community-wide reading initiative, is Jack London’s The Call of the Wild. Therefore, the photo competition theme is environment, nature and wildlife.

JUROR: MONTE NAGLER
Photographer Monte Nagler is a noted writer, lecturer and teacher of photography.  He began photographing seriously after studying with renowned photographer Ansel Adams. Nagler’s photographs have won numerous awards and are found in many private and public collections including the Detroit Institute of Arts, the University of Michigan Museum of Art, the Dayton Art Institute, the Brooklyn Museum, General Electric Corporation, and Ford, Chrysler and General Motors among others. He is a member of the esteemed Camera Craftsmen of America, one of 40 members worldwide.

ELIGIBILITY
Professional and amateur photographers, 14 years of age or older, are eligible to submit up to two works for consideration. Work should be current (within two years). For younger photographers (age 18 and under), there will be a separate youth photo exhibition. Photographers in the 14-18 age range can submit their photos to either the competition (requires an entry fee) or the youth exhibition (no fee required).

AGREEMENT
Submission of work(s) to the juror constitutes compliance with all the conditions stated in this prospectus. The juror’s decision is final. Participating artists will be notified of the juror’s results. Accepted works will remain as placed by staff and will not be withdrawn until the close of the exhibition.

ENTRY FEE (non-refundable)
An entry fee of $15 per artist, per entry or 2 for $25 must accompany submission of not more than two entries. Checks should be made out to: Friends of the Library Dearborn.

ENTRY PROCEDURE
April 28: Photo Submissions Due – Works must be delivered on April 28, between 2 and 6 p.m. to Henry Ford Centennial Library (16301 Michigan Ave., Dearborn, MI 48126). No work will be accepted after 6 p.m. on Monday, April 28.

April 29: If your work is NOT selected for exhibition, you will be notified by phone or email. Declined work must be picked up at Henry Ford Centennial Library on April 29 between 2 and 4 p.m.

May 1: 6-8 p.m. Exhibition opens in the Henry Ford Centennial Library, Rotunda Gallery. Awards presented.

May 19: 8:30 p.m. Exhibition closes. (See below for information about an additional exhibit opportunity.)

May 20: 4-6 p.m. Work must be reclaimed from Henry Ford Centennial Library. (See conditions below.)

ENTRY AND PRESENTATION REQUIREMENTS
An entry form must be completed. Affix “Artwork” description card A and/or B to photo(s). Accepted entries must not exceed 24″ x 36″ and must be matted, framed under Plexiglas (acrylic), and ready for hanging. Hanging wire must be used. Glass will not be accepted.

DELIVERY
All selected works must be delivered on Monday, April 28, from 2-6 p.m., to Henry Ford Centennial Library (16301 Michigan Ave., Dearborn, MI 48126) in the Rotunda Gallery for final Juror’s review.

CONDITIONS
All work will be handled in a professional manner. Henry Ford Centennial Library will be responsible for works in its keeping through the entry process and exhibition period (April 28 – May 20, 2014). Works must be picked up between 4-6 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20. Works left after May 20 are not the responsibility of Henry Ford Centennial Library.

SALES
20 percent of the sales price of any work sold during the exhibit will be donated to the Friends of the Library Dearborn (FOLD).

ADDITIONAL EXHIBIT OPPORTUNITY
Oakwood Arts for the Spirit Program will select and exhibit up to 20 pieces from The Big Read Dearborn photo exhibit to display at Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center during the third quarter, July-September 2014. Details will be provided to The Big Read Dearborn exhibitors at a later date.
